It's Easy to Discount Your Growth When You're A High Performer
May 14, 2024
I just got off a private call with a client, and I knew I had to write about it...
You see, I've been working with this client for over 3 years, in my groups at first and now in 1:1.
She's created exponential success, but it's hard for her to see it sometimes.
I asked her to look at the actual data from the history of her business.
From 2022-2023, she 5x her business revenue, and during that time she had a baby.
Talk about exponential growth-- those results are incredible! And yet... she didn't see it and wasn't using it as evidence of her success.
There is a principle that Dan Sullivan teaches that he calls "the gap and the gain."
It's easy to look ahead and see the gap of where you are and where you want to be, and feel discouraged.
But all the momentum, belief, and power comes from looking at the GAIN. Comparing where you are now to where you USED to be.
All you see is growth.
Coming FROM growth feels totally different than coming FROM the lack of future results.
When me and my client reviewed her numbers, it was obvious she was on a fast track for success, that the sky is the limit for her.. but she couldn't see that because she was finding all the ways she wasn't good enough.
High performers often discount their growth because they are always setting higher goals.
The point of this message isn't to STOP setting higher goals.
I love having high, hard, and meaningful goals.
The key here is to know where you're coming FROM as you create those goals.
Coming FROM the gain, from reflecting on your growth, changes everything
It gives you the stamina to move through dips in revenue, hard times, and turns in the marketplace or changes to the social media algorithms.
It gives you perspective so you can see yourself more honestly. (High performers almost always see themselves as not good enough yet. They often discount what they've created up to this point.)
It gives you a powerful combination of gratitude and grit. Gratitude for your past self, and the grit to keep on the journey toward your vision for the future.
Like most things in life, being a high performer is a two edged sword. The constant striving for more serves a purpose. And, if left unchecked, it can hurt you... you might miss how well you're actually doing and miss opportunities for more peace of mind, joy, and fulfillment along the way.
My work is helping people create their high, hard goals WITH expanding peace of mind, joy, and fulfillment all the way up.
Entrepreneurship is like climbing a mountain with no peak. Once you reach one peak, you just see evidence of a new, higher peak. The goal isn't to get to the peak and stop. The goal is to keep climbing, expanding, and loving the process of who you're becoming, because growth and evolution over a lifetime is what the game is about.
